So my friend Elizabeth is moving to Japan in a week to teach English, and she's starting a blog about life in Japan. And I thought, well I'm moving to New York, can't I start a blog too? (This is a bit like when I was five and my friend got a My Little Pony, so of course I had to have an even better My Little Pony!) I know New York is not quite as exciting or novel as Japan, (STC has demystified it for my generation) but I've always wanted to start a blog, so here is my excuse. I will try to make things like Jewish delis and Upper West Side nannies as exciting as possible.
I'm calling it southern girl in NY because I expect to be cold for the vast majority of my time in NY, except for maybe a few weeks in August. As a former North Carolinian, I'm sure everyone will seem abrupt and rude, the streets will always look dirty, ingredients like butter, mayo, and breading will stragely missing from my food, and I'll have trouble figuing out how address groups of people directly (you guys? you all? hey?). But all that aside, I'm sure I'll manage just fine. New York is not really that scary (except for Times Square during the holidays - yikes), and usually a lot of fun. I'll be navigating between Chelsea (where Patrick's apt is) and the NYU campus (in the "Village") most days. I'm starting at NYU's Wagner School this Fall to get my MPA - Master's of Public Administration. I'm hoping someday it will lead to a job where I can think critically about policy issues, instead of scaning documents and answering the phone. Fingers crossed!
So I have 7 more days in DC until I leave for NC, and then NY. I'm trying to say goodbye to everything and everyone I love in DC before I go (goodbye Meridian Park! goodbye Washington Monument! goodbye Cake Love scones and Good Stuff french fries!) If you have goodbye suggestions please let me know. I will miss DC.
